Writes of Way Winter Report

I found this blog already quite a while back and thought it would be a good time to mention it here tonight. The blog itself is titled Writes of Way and has many interesting stories of Scotland and other places in the world. The blog has a very interesting section on Islay titled "To the Lighthouse"with some really special images of the caves in the Rhuvaal area amongst others. The author starts to write about the days before christmas spending time at Ardlussa on Jura when he heads to Islay on a cold winters day: "We made the five minute crossing of the Sound of Islay on the Eilan Dhiura, arriving at Port Askaig. Looking back across the sound, the Paps of Jura were resplendent under their snowy mantle. I was soon picked up by friends arriving on the mainland ferry – we would be spending Christmas at Port Charlotte on the Rinns of Islay and I was already looking forward to getting in a few walks around Islay’s magnificent coastline." The largest part of this blog post, and the most interesting part as well, is about their walk to Rhuvaal: "On Christmas Eve, myself and Fiona borrowed Bess the dog from our friends and set out to walk around Islay’s north-eastern tip. Leaving the car on the road above the Bunnahabhain Distillery on the Sound of Islay, we set off towards Rhuvaal lighthouse following the ATV tracks that wend their way through the boggy terrain above the shore. In less than two hours we arrived at Rhuvaal – surely one of the most magnificently situated lighthouses in the British Isles. The tall, slender white 36-metre high beacon stands sentinel-like overlooking the Firth of Lorn and the Sound of Islay. On a clear day there are magnificent views of Jura, Mull, Colonsay, Scarba and The Garvellachs to be enjoyed." A really nice and entertaining blog post and there are some more posts there which are very much worth reading!
