Wilder Ways Horse Riding Adventure on Islay

Wilder Ways offers you an opportunity to take their experienced horses on an exhilarating journey through some of the lesser known wilds of Scotland. Whether you are an adventure seeker wanting a trip of a life time, or are looking to get back into riding and build your confidence back up, Wilder Ways have an adventure to suit you. Customers can even bring their own horse, either to adventure to the max, or to gain confidence from being part of our experienced herd. And now Wilder Ways take to the seas for their Isle of Islay adventure this summer.

The herd will travel by ferry to enjoy the beautiful Hebridean Isle of Islay for the month of July. Wilder Ways have been working hard to put together an exciting programme of riding adventures, so you can explore some of the breath-taking scenery of this stunning island and enjoy the many exhilarating riding experiences on offer. There are 7km of golden beach, cliff-top paths, woodland trails and hills and, for the adventurous, some of the most extreme wilderness riding available. They offer a range of products from half day rides to week long all-inclusive holidays. Please see below for the details and dates for their riding holidays (short breaks i.e. our miniatures and week long packages). Half day and full day rides are available throughout the month subject to availability. Bespoke trips made up of multiple days may also be available by arrangement.

Adventure: Wilderness and Whisky miniature

A short break exploring Islay’s beautiful coastline and heritage and sampling local whisky
3 dates available: July 11th -13th, July 22nd – 24th and July 28th – 30th. Price: £495

Description
Experience Islay in miniature. Ride some of the most breath-taking coastal scenery of the island, exploring beaches, scrambling hill trails and coastal paths, and have a gamble along the 'long beach', a stunning swathe of golden sand with opportunities to canter, paddle and even swim with your horse if the sun's out.

Trip Details
Start – 12noon July 11th (or 22nd or 28th) at Ballivicar Farm
Transfers – We will pick you up from Port Ellen ferry terminal or Islay airport. Transfers to Islay can be organised by arrangement (See directions for more information). All transport on the island is included.
Riding – 2 ½ days
Lunches – picnic on the hoof, provided by Wilder Ways
Accommodation – 2 nights’ accommodation at a small family hotel in Bowmore
Evening meals – Locally sourced food and a good selection of Islay malt whiskies
Other – There's usually live traditional music on, and plenty to see in the town.
Finish – 5pm July 13th (or 24th or 30th)

The Ride
We'll start with a scramble down past the old light-house into a tiny, sandy beach and canter back along mossy forest trails, with some long views across this stunning island. Then we'll ride out onto the southern hills, past the ruins of old farm steadings and fanks and pick our way around the coast across unchartered hillside. The finale is a beach ride along a 7km swathe of golden sand with a chance to paddle (or maybe even swim) with your horse, picnic on the beach and a enjoy a great gallop.

A fabulous week of exhilarating riding through some of the most beautiful landscape and remote wilderness in the West of Scotland. This ride will include a three day point-to point exploration of the southern tip of Islay, along old tracks and across remote open hillside to the spectacular cliffs of the Oa. We'll visit a local distillery on horse-back on the fourth day followed by an evening's entertainment and then finish with a ride along the 'long beach', a stunning 7km swathe of golden sand with opportunities to canter, paddle, or maybe even swim with your horse if the sun's out.

Transfers – We will pick you up from Port Ellen ferry terminal or Islay airport. See directions for more information. Transfers between the stables and accommodation is provided.

Accommodation – 4 nights’ accommodation at a small family hotel in Bowmore (first and last night) During the point-to point section of the ride we'll be staying together 1 night in a cottage and 1 night camping along the way.
Evening meals – Locally sourced food and a good selection of Islay malt whiskies
Other – There's usually live traditional music on, and plenty to see in the town.
Finish – 10am July 21st

The Ride
This ride starts with a point-to-point ride around the southern tip of Islay, scrambling down past the old light-house into a tiny, sandy beach and on across the southern hills, past the ruins of old farm steadings and fanks, picking our way around the coast across unchartered hillside. Our remote adventure across to the Point of Oa takes us through untouched hills where you'll learn how find a route by the plants under your hooves. You'll enjoy views of the dramatic crags at the point where eagles soar, gulls sweep the cliffs. We'll rejoin civilisation with a ride out past one of the famous Islay whisky distilleries - fancy a dram? The finale is a beach ride along a 7km swathe of golden sand with a chance to paddle (and maybe even swim) with your horse, picnic on the beach and a enjoy great gallop.
