Becky's Fundraising Walk Covering Islay's Coastline
Thursday, August 02 2007
What can you do to support your favorite charity? You can simply transfer money or you can do something special to draw other people's attention and attract sponsors who believe in you. Some people, like Brian Palmer, join the London to Paris ride or organise the Gran Fondo d'Ardbeg, others organise a raffle and Becky Williamson from Islay tries to walk the whole Islay Coastline by joining the MCS Coastal Challenge. Becky contacted me a few days ago and I admire the goal she has set herself. This is a sometimes very challenging walk over rough terrain in very remote parts of Islay, over a total distance of 130 miles!
With this walk she raises money for The Marine Conservation Society (MCS), which is the UK charity dedicated to caring for our seas, shores and wildlife. MCS campaigns for clean seas and beaches, sustainable fisheries, protection of marine life and habitats, and the sensitive use of our marine resources for future generations. Kate Humble, the BBC reporter we know from Springwatch, is a strong supporter of the MCS and encourages people to join the Coastal Challenge.
How does it work? You try and find your own sponsor(s), then you walk, sail, swim or cycle parts of the UK coastline and try to raise as much money as possible to support the goals of the MCS. When you raise £100 or more you’ll even become an MCS Champion and you appear on the MCS website Champion Wall of Fame. I helped her a bit with that by sponsoring Becky with £10 and she now raised £107 as of today ;-)

Becky Williamson started her walk some time ago and she has walked almost 100 miles in several stages. On her blog she writes about her walks and shows pictures from Islay's beautiful coastline. She also uses a map to mark the parts she walked and I noticed she has some challenging stretches of coastline to cover, but she is determined to finish her 130 miles. I can imagine that you like to help Becky with a donation to complete the last 30 miles of her coastal trip and support the MCS. You can do so at her personal online sponsor page where you can make an online donation at: www.justgiving.com/joiningupthecoastline.
