Walk Islay 2008 - Walk on the Wild Side

Yes, it’s almost that time of year again, as Walkislay starts with Donald James on Saturday 12th April. DJ’s walk starts from Dunlossit Kennels at 10.15 am sharp, and will take in the ruins of six former chapels en route. It is about eight miles in total and allowing for various stops for a breather and for food, we hope to finish by late afternoon. As with all our walks, we would request that folk taking part come with suitable footwear, and are suitably clad should the weather turn inclement, and that you remember to bring some food with you.

On Sunday, there is a choice of two walks. One from Bunnahabhain led by Lindy and Bryony, starting at 10.15 am, climbs to the summits of Margadale Hill and onto Sgarbh Breac before descending down to the Sound of Islay and returning to Bunnahabhain. Another 8 miler, with some spectacular views from the tops, weather permitting. Please remember to bring your packed lunch with you. This is the only walk where well behaved, sociable dogs are welcome but there may be some areas where they may need to be put on their leads. Continue reading....

The second walk is led by Susan McGhie, starting at 2pm  from the junction on the High road that leads back to Bowmore past Cruach. The walk itself is along the “Burma Road” which is the track built after the Great War following the River Laggan down towards Corrary. This walk will take us a maximum of three hours, depending how often we stop, and is four miles in length. At 9pm on Sunday evening, at Port Charlotte Hotel there will be some light music, so all are welcome to come along and enjoy the craic and the music.

On to Monday, and another 2 different walks on offer, Walter Ramsay  will be leading the longer walk that day starting from the cask warehouse at Bruichladdich at 9.45am and going over the moorland to Kilchoman Distillery where you will be able to get your lunch rather than having to make more sandwiches! We return to Bruichladdich via Sunderland hill. The shorter option is a walk out to Solum, led by Lindy and Florrie from Ardbeg Distillery starting at 9.45 sharp. Again you can purchase lunch at Ardbeg if you wish on your return.

On Monday evening at 8 pm, the Visitor’s Welcome evening is to be held at Lagavulin Distillery, not at the Gaelic college as previously announced. The walk on Tuesday with Jack Adamson is already fully booked up, but Michael Copleston will be leading a circular walk on the Oa out to the American monument and returning back along the coastline. The walk starts at 10 am and starts from the car park at Upper Killeyan.
