Every now and then I find a site that is worth mentioning on the Islay Weblog, this time it's the The Scotch Blog. The author of the blog is Kevin who also runs the Doceon website.

In 2006 The Scotch Blog held the first Drammie awards. A competition where the readers from The Scotch Blog can vote for nominees in a variety of categories. A nice initiative of you ask me, and a chance for everyone to join and express your opinion. This years Drammie award nominees included some Islay Distilleries.

Here is a list of "Islay Winners":

  • Innovator of the Year - Special Mention: Jim McEwan & Bruichladdich.
  • Distillery of the Year - Special Mention: Ardbeg Distillery.
  • Most under-rated Whisky - Special Mention: Isle of Jura 10
  • Best New Product - Special Mentions: Laphroaig Quarter Cask
  • Distillery of the Year: Bruichladdich Distillery

In an earlier post I already wrote about the re-branding of Bowmore's entire product range. Ian Buxton, who has been working in the whisky industry for more than 20 years, wrote an interesting story about Bowmore's future plans called A new Chapter.

    QUOTE
As part of a "strategic review" of their business the Japanese-owned distiller has decided that new packaging and new advertising is in order for Bowmore, the world's tenth best-selling single malt. Morrison Bowmore sells 132,000 cases of Bowmore worldwide each year but believes there is scope for further growth - but driven by the brand's quality and positioning not aggressive pricing. Key markets are the USA, Asia and tax-free, with a planned £20m investment (approx $39m) scheduled over the next five years.

So if you like to stay up to date about the Scottish Whisky Industry The Scotch Blog is a good site for a regular visit.
