SeaKayakPhoto Blog Revisited

A little over a year ago I wrote about one of my favourite blogs, the SeaKayakPhoto Blog. This blog goes back to July 2006 and is dedicated to Sea Kayaking in the west of Scotland. Since then hundreds of posts were published with perhaps thousands of images. The author of the blog is Douglas Wilcox who also runs the Scottish Sea Kayaking Photo Gallery. Several sections of this magnificent website contain images and text from Tony Page. I mentioned Tony Page before on my blog in a post called the beauty of kayaking where I wrote about his trips to Corryvreckan and the circumnavigation of Jura. Continue reading......

The Lonely Bothy - Sound of Islay

The reason for this post is the fact that Douglas Wilcox and a friend returned to the 'magnificent isle of Islay' as he calls it. So far he posted a couple of blogs and images from the first legs of their trip, from Kennacraig to Port Askaig, where they arrived, and from Port Askaig to Rhuvaal, the lighthouse at the most northerly tip of the island. Douglas wrote about the very first moments of their trip: "Leaving Port Askaig, the flood tide was racing north up the Sound of Islay at 16km/hr so there was really little choice involved in deciding where to go. Just round the corner from Port Askaig, the NW wind proved to be one of the sweetest winds on the west coast. It was carrying the "Angels' Share" over the water from the Caol Ila distillery." There are worse ways to start a day!

I haven't contacted Douglas to ask him which parts of Islay's coast he visited this time so I can only advice a regular (re)visit to his excellent blog. And if not for Islay you will find many more posts and stunning images of other beautiful islands and coastlines on Scotland's westcoast. The image above shows 'a lonely bothy' on Islay on the shore of the Sound of Islay and is part of their kayaking calendar for 2009.

The Maggie

Buy The Maggie from Amazon The Maggie is one of Ealing studios lesser known comedies. It is however a 'gem' in the true sense of the word. The film has everything, humour, tragedy, pathos, romance. A wily old skipper of a Western Isles 'Puffer' and his motley crew lead all who come into contact with them a fine old time!
