The beauty of rain on Islay

When Manuela and myself visited Rachel Whyte at Glenegedale House during our Islay trip she said: Ron, I love your website but I'm missing something, you don't have pictures from rain on Islay on your website. A little embarrassed I said that she was probably right. Fact is that when we visit islay in May the weather is usually quite good with lots of sunshine, so making pictures of rainy days wasn't easy at all. Luckily we managed to have a few days with showers and rain this year and I think I managed to capture the beauty of Islay during those weather conditions.

The picture below shows the village of Portnahaven just before a huge shower reached us. The wind was quite strong causing huge waves to crash on the nearby rocks which is a spectacular view. In fact an even better view of the huge waves during strong westerly winds is close to the Currie Sands, next to the Wavegen Power Station.

When the rain was pouring down we got back in the car, knowing of a good place where we perhaps could expect something beautiful as soon as the rain was gone. We parked our car close to Nerabus on the side of the road and waited patiently for the rain to clear and things to come and yes, we were lucky and waited exactly at the right spot on the right time. The shower headed over Loch Indaal in the direction of Bowmore, the sun was appearing behind the clouds and I already had my camera ready for the following picture. An amazing rainbow over Loch Indaal connecting the house on the left with the graveyard at Nerabus on the right. Thanks for the tip Rachel. Islay is magic, even with a huge rain shower and strong winds.

The Maggie

Buy The Maggie from Amazon The Maggie is one of Ealing studios lesser known comedies. It is however a 'gem' in the true sense of the word. The film has everything, humour, tragedy, pathos, romance. A wily old skipper of a Western Isles 'Puffer' and his motley crew lead all who come into contact with them a fine old time!
