Islay has a sparkling new community centre, called the Port Mor centre, and offers many facilities to Islay residents and visitors. The Port Mor centre opened in May 2007 and is located just outside of Port Charlotte. The open day took place on Saturday 31st March 2007. The building is very environmental friendly and is powered by a 6KW wind turbine for the electricity and a ground source heating system to provide heating. The solar panels on the roof provide hot water making the building carbon neutral.

Some of the facilities offered are:

  • A campsite overlooking Loch Indaal with many facilities
  • A cafe opened from 9am to 9pm serving breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Mainhall for disco's and Ceilidh's
  • Meeting room for businesses
  • Wireless internet access
  • Childrens Playground
  • Football pitch for the Kilchoman Football club

Today their new website was launched, which is built by James McGregor from Islay IT, providing lots of useful information about the new centre, the facilities on offer and contact information. The address of the new website is: www.islandofislay.co.uk. The Warden for the Port Mòr Centre is James McEachern who can be contacted by email or by phone on +44 (0) 1496 850441.

The campsite was a succes from the start. During the Whisky festival the site was very well occupied, which is logical given the unique location. An easy 10 minute walk will take you to Port Charlotte and all it's facilities, such as the Museum of Islay Life, the Islay Natural History Trust, a shop and the Lochindaal and Port Charlotte hotel.

The official opening of the centre will take place in the summer of 2007, but already the centre appears to be a big succes. Congratulations with this beautiful new centre on Islay!
