Nine Month Closure of Port Ellen Ferry Terminal Islay

CMAL issued the following press release today which I've copied in full below:

Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) is delighted to announce that the contract for the reconstruction of Port Ellen pier has been awarded to McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd (McL&H).

The reconstruction will replace the existing pier which is reaching the end of its serviceable life. The new pier has been designed to provide improved berthing facilities and will accommodate the new vessel MV FINLAGGAN, which is due to commence on the Islay route in spring 2011.

Works are scheduled to commence on Friday 25 March 2011. The terminal will be closed to ferry traffic for the nine month duration of the construction period, with all ferry services being diverted to Port Askaig. The CalMac terminal building will remain open to the public throughout the works.

In addition, works to upgrade the terminal at Kennacraig to provide improved berths, enhanced lighting and better parking and marshalling areas are due to complete in summer 2011. The berth works will be complete in time for the arrival of MV Finlaggan. Continue reading

CMAL will host a project meeting at Ramsay Hall in Port Ellen on Wednesday 9 March 2011 at 7.30pm. The public are invited to come along and meet the project team, consisting of CMAL, CalMac Ferries Ltd, McLaughlin & Harvey and Halcrow Group Ltd (engineers) and hear more about the programme of works over the coming months.

The meeting is the first of a series of project meetings planned as the works progress, to ensure the local community are kept informed of the latest developments.

Commenting on the latest developments, Lorna Spencer, Director of Harbours and Piers said: "We are delighted to announce that we have appointed McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd for the reconstruction of Port Ellen pier which will significantly improve the infrastructure at the port and make way for the arrival of the MV FINLAGGAN later this year. We would encourage the local community to come along to the project meeting to hear more about the works.

"This project marks a major investment by CMAL, as part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining and developing harbour and pier facilities, to promote and facilitate modern harbour and ferry operations."
