Third Release of Port Charlotte Islay Single Malt

The third release of the cult Port Charlotte Islay single malt whisky has been bottled and named "PC7 - The Islay Way". From the same inaugural vintage stocks distilled at the Bruichladdich distillery in 2001, this year’s version was bottled in October 2008 at seven years of age. The American oak matured spirit, now a year older, has a natural cask strength of 61%, the ‘trickle distilled’ whisky becoming more compelling with each bottling. Distilled from barley peated to 40 ppm - it is one of the heaviest peated whiskies around, in direct contrast to the minimally peated Bruichladdich. This limited release allows connoisseurs to follow the extraordinary evolution of this heavily peated spirit by comparing with the earlier bottlings of PC5 and PC6. Controversially, there are again six tin designs celebrating the contribution of the broader community, an integral part of the unfolding Bruichladdich story.

Jim McEwan, head distiller, said: 'For PC6 we paid tribute to the men who made the whisky but it caused a furore with collectors. No doubt this will too. 'For PC7 we wanted to recognize the stalwarts who have helped steady the ship through the many squalls we have encountered on our journey so far. 'The hard-working people who answered the call. With out them, and others in our community, we would have struggled longer and travelled less far. 'We offer them our gratitude and heartfelt thanks: sin an doigh Ileach - 'it’s the Islay way' - and may it never change.' Despite it’s youth Port Charlotte Islay single malt has been qualitatively rated in distillery tables alongside the legendary Port Ellen and Laphroaig. In Jim Murray’s Scotch Whisky Bible 2009, PC6 won Best Whisky under 12 Years and Best New Whisky (out of 1027 candidates) with a rating of 96.5%.

The limited release of 24,000 bottles worldwide will be sold for £62 (UK) or $135. The PC7 is non chill-filtered and colouring-free. The tin designs mention the gaelic words "Sin an Doigh Ileach", which is Gaelic for The Islay Way, and depict the people who have been involved in creating and maturing this new great whisky from the Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay.
