There Will be no Barrel to Spot

After reading the Laddieblog tonight about the cancellation of the Spot The Barrel competition, I had some very mixed feelings. I couldn't believe it at first so I checked with brian and he confirmed that there won't be a barrel dropped from a plane, no competition, no prizes up to £250,000, no supporting of charities and no refund of your night's stay at the new hotel. According to the Laddieblog there were only 1000 tickets sold of the projected 40,000. This must be a very sad day for Roland and his team and most likely a financial set back. Also many participants in the competition will be very disappointed and might wonder "and now what"?

From what I read, all the monies will be refunded which will be a huge and expensive operation. I'm sure this is not what Roland had in mind and perhaps there is someting "we" can do. With "we" I mean all the participants in the competition. If we all unite and support Roland with the new hotel and let him keep our money, he could give half of it to the charities on Islay and keep the other half to cover all the expenses he has made. And he could still give all the participants a refund for £25 when they stay in the new Islay Hotel, which would certainly be a worthwile marketing initiative.

I'm not sure what you all think about this idea, you probably think I am very naive and you are probably right. I also don't have a clue how to "organize" this. Perhaps you can send me an email or put a comment below this post and let me know your opinions. Thanks!

Obviously a huge disappointment for many people, Roland in particular. Not only does he have to deal with the refunds, I think reading what Mark has written won't be easy for him either.

I knew since yesterday from an e-mail sent to the entrants (if you left your e-mail you should have received one as well?) but haven't blogged about it yet as I haven't figured out how to yet.

While your idea is commendable I have my serious doubts it is workable. I suspect legally he is liable to return the money, he has also already communicated it to many people. Further complicating the process by some people saying keep it and do something with it will probably make the process even worse (not forgetting potential further legal complications).

Hi Armin, funny enough I didn't receive an email and I did buy two tickets! I am not sure this idea I have will work either but at least we, as an online community, can raise a voice to try and help someone. I agree that legally there are some things to overcome. That however doesn't mean that it can't be done and therefore I feel we HAVE to try it. Ron

The Maggie

Buy The Maggie from Amazon The Maggie is one of Ealing studios lesser known comedies. It is however a 'gem' in the true sense of the word. The film has everything, humour, tragedy, pathos, romance. A wily old skipper of a Western Isles 'Puffer' and his motley crew lead all who come into contact with them a fine old time!
