A few years back Gus Newman, owner of StormCats boat building company in Lagavulin, started with an entirely new concept for accommodation. Gus constructed a fibreglass unit with a lovely interior, built it into a wee hill, covered the top with turf and a brand new type of accommodation was born, the StormPod. Since then business is going rather well, he even received an Edge Award. Gus now rents out two pods at Lagavulin Bay. He also sold a bigger one to someone on the Isle of Skye and there is now a beautiful large version, a real "Mega Pod" in use as self catering accommodation on the Oa. The owner of this large StormPod is Susan Middleton who runs the successful Swallows Roost B&B. A few weeks back I asked Susan about her new venture:
Susan said: "When I first heard about StormPods, a new type of "glamping" accommodation which was being constructed on Islay by local boat builder Gus Newman, I really didn't know what to expect. However, after a visit to the Stormpod at Lagavulin I was impressed by the eco design which included solar shower, turfed roof and pine clad interior." Continue reading...
"So after deciding that the two bedroomed pod we required should be located nestling into the hillside enjoying panoramic views overlooking Kilnaughton Bay, all we had to do was wait for it to be delivered which it was on the back of Gordon Curries lorry!!!! No mean feat considering we live at the top of a fairly steep hill. It was an interesting afternoon watching the pod being hoisted from the lorry and onto its concrete base.
Now "Port Ellen Pod " is complete. A large decked area with outdoor seating means sunny days can be spent relaxing watching the yachts bob about on the bay beyond the lighthouse. If the weather is not so agreeable then the cosy comfort inside the pod is a tranquil retreat. It really is a room with a view!! For more info visit www.portellen-self-catering.co.uk
