I cannot emphasise enough that Islay has a lot to offer for its visitors and it's amazing how many clubs and activities there are on a relatively small island. With the long winter evenings it comes as no surprise that a number of Ileach play chess and the village of Portnahaven even has its own Chess Club. Ken McLean, also a member, sent me the following info of a memorable night in spring this year.
A big thank you to Alfons Luond (front right) from Switzerland for sending this photo taken in May 2007. Alfons had dropped into An Tigh Siennse in Portnahaven for a meal with his wife and ended up staying for an enjoyable game of chess with some of the regulars. Also pictured are Michael Taylor, Peter MacGillivray, and Ken McLean. Other stalwarts of the club Allan Gallie and Alan Jenkins are sure to have been just out of shot.
Portnahaven Chess Club meet on Tuesday nights in the pub and welcomes everyone from beginners to masters who can make time for a friendly game and a dram. Visitors from all over the world have dropped in and enjoyed an evening with the regulars, and several have promised to come back to take there revenge!
