Port Ellen Book Festival 2007

  Wednesday, April 04 2007

Following the great success of the first Book Festival on Islay last year, authors are now booked for this year’s event which will take placed on June 16th and 17th in Port Ellen Primary School. ‘An opportunity for authors and book lovers to join together in a festive atmosphere’ is a definition from the internet which certainly covered last year’s festival; and the hopes for this year’s too. It could be an opportunity to meet an author whose work you know and then stay on to hear one quite new to you.

For children too, a Book Festival is a great place to develop a love of reading through listening to, and meeting their favourite writers and illustrators. The 2007 Festival should appeal to people with a wide range of interests. For example, two well known crime writers will talk about their work and a novelist will tell how her upbringing in Glasgow’s East End shaped her writing. By contrast, the biographer of the famous Scottish cyclist Robert Millar will expand on the highs and lows of Robert's sporting achievement in a session at the Old Kiln Café at the Ardbeg Distillery, where there will also be a showing of the 1985 Granada TV documentary ‘The High Life’. Another writer will share insights into the life of Robert Louis Stevenson.

The format for the adults’, and parallel children’s event will be four sessions each day. Writers will read from their latest book. talk about how they write and where they get their ideas. Sessions will end with questions from the audience and an opportunity to buy books and get them signed by the authors. So there it is, readers and writers, young and old, coming together in a relaxed atmosphere to share and celebrate their love of books and reading. Oh, and last but by no means least, there will be good things to eat all day!

The Port Ellen Book Festival has it's own website with the full children's and adult programme and an introduction of the writers who will attend the festival.
