Islay News Roundup Second Half October 2007

  Sunday, November 04 2007

Following is a short overview of Islay news published in the Ileach Newspaper and from various other sources.

Young Ilich Shine at National Mod: Bowmore Primary School’s Gaelic choir members covered themselves with glory when they won the Badenoch and Strathspey Area Committee trophy for their high quality unison singing at last week’s Royal National Mod at Fort William. Ryan Johnston picture right.

Calmac Ordered new Ferry for Islay: A £21 Million ferry has been ordered for Caledonian MacBrayne’s routes to Islay. Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) today announced the order which has been placed with the Remontowa yard in Gdansk, Poland.

Bowmore Hall handover: Bowmore village hall was officially handed over by Argyll and Bute Council to a community-based committee at an informal ceremony and luncheon in the island venue on Friday. The hall’s transferred ownership was accepted by the committee’s chairperson Margaret MacLean at a nominal fee of £1 and the hand-over was carried out by Sandy MacTaggart, the Argyll and Bute Council’s head of Facility Services.

Islay Post Offices Avoid Closure: Post Offices on Islay have been saved from closure under the controversial government restructuring plans for the network. This follows a vociferous campaign against the outlet closure involving MPs, including Argyll’s Alan Reid, and local councillor Robin Currie.

Islay Oil Problem resurfaces: At 17.00 hrs on Wednesday 24th October the oil tanker ‘Keewhit’ left Islay without offloading her cargo of heavy oil for the distilleries after spending almost three days anchored in Loch Indaal waiting for appropriate weather conditions to enable her to lie against the new Bruichladdich Pier. The situation seems to be back to normal since the Keewhit managed to dock and unload half a load of oil last week.

No trouble at the Mill!: Islay tweeds continue to be much in demand in the world of film and the Bridgend-based mill is currently producing tweed for a forthcoming film biography of the Bronte sisters. Previous film commitments have included ‘December Bride’, ‘Hemingway’, ‘Braveheart’ ‘Rob Roy, ‘Chaplin’, ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Kidnapped’.

Ardbeg Ten is announced World Whisky of the Year: Ardbeg Ten Years Old has been awarded the ultimate accolade, as World Whisky of the Year. Internationally acclaimed whisky expert, Jim Murray, author of ‘The Whisky Bible’ has furthered the honour by making this the first single malt Scotch winner ever. Ardbeg 10 Years Old is also accorded Scotch Single Malt of the Year at the same time.

Rest and Be Thankful Closed: The main road between Loch Lomond and Loch Fyne in Argyll has been closed since last weekend after hundreds of tonnes of rock and mud fell onto the road at Rest and Be Thankful. Heavy rain at the end of October caused this massive landslip. Visitors to and from Glasgow travelling to Islay have to add an extra 35 miles to their journey. This situation will most likely last untill the 14th of November. Picture courtesy of traffic scotland.
