The Islay Cinema
Monday, June 25 2007
Someone asked me a few weeks ago if Islay has its own cinema and the answer is: Yes sometimes. This might sound strange because cinema's normally don't pop-up everytime they are needed. But the cinema on Islay does and it's called the Screenmachine. The Screenmachine is a mobile cinema in a truck and HI~Arts (Highlands and Islands Arts Ltd) is the company that has been bringing the big screen cinema experience to the Highlands and Islands since 1998, via its two mobile cinemas, Screen Machines One and Two. The driving cinema visits Islay every once and a while and usually parks opposite Ramsay Hall in Port Ellen (close to the White Hart Hotel). A few days before the Screenmachine visits Islay flyers are put up all over the island. Screenmachine also has a website where you can check when the cinema comes to Islay. This month the Screenmachine will be in Port Ellen on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 June, playing Pirates of the Caribean - At World's End. The movie starts 8.30pm and tickets can be booked online through www.thebooth.co.uk.
The picture on the right shows the Screenmachine parked at Port Ellen. If you like to see the inside together with some nice video images from Islay and Scotland have a look at the Screenmachine Take Two Promotional Video
