Islay Airport Open Day 2007

On Sunday 19 August the Islay Airport Open day was held on Islay's only airport at Glenegedale. This is always a day with a lot of activities on and near the airport. The events commenced with the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate those who lost their lives in the Air Ambulance crash of 28th September 1957. Pilot Captain T M Calderwood, Radio Officer Hugh McGinlay and Nursing Sister Jean Kennedy died when their Heron aircraft crashed near the present Islay airport when coming in to land in appalling weather to evaculate a seriously ill patient from Islay.. The unveiling of the plaque commemorating the Islay air ambulance disaster opened the show and was unveiled by the son and two daughters of the radio officer killed on that flight. They are L-R Jim McGinlay, Mary Edmiston and Josephine McDaid.

Other highlights of this open day were: A low level flypast of a Dakota from the Battle of Britain Flight, several performances of the Black Bottle Islay Pipe Band, a raffle, many planes which could be inspected from really close, a demonstration by LAFB/Ambulance Service, a demonstration by HM Coast Guard Cliff Rescue and lots more as the pictures will show.

Here are a few very impressed kids!

The Maggie

Buy The Maggie from Amazon The Maggie is one of Ealing studios lesser known comedies. It is however a 'gem' in the true sense of the word. The film has everything, humour, tragedy, pathos, romance. A wily old skipper of a Western Isles 'Puffer' and his motley crew lead all who come into contact with them a fine old time!
