Islay House Update

Every now and then, probably just like Armin, I try to find out what the status is of the sale of Islay House, and every time I find out there isn't much to report. At first Islay House was put on the market for £2,250,000 and later the price had dropped to £1,750,000. The strange thing however is that Islay House was, and still is, for sale at Savills from Edinburgh but about a week ago I found the same Islay House listed at another estate agent called William Montgomery. This William Montgomery is a fine art and property consultant and has similar estates listed on his website. This listing by the way looks a lot better than the one at Savills and has great pictures from the outside as well as the inside. Another interesting thing I found of Islay House was an image from 1902 on www.ambaile.org.uk

What happened to the attempts at a community buyout? I think it will be very difficult, particularly in the current financial climate, to find a private buyer with no connection to Islay.

As far as I know and have heard there is nothing to report about the community buy-out. I wouldn't be surprised if the price went down even further which could be of influence of a buy-out. To be continued..... :-)

Not sure I should repeat what I already said in the summer in the Islay Forum about this, other than to say that I still think it is possible.
And on top of what I mentioned about the Mansion House at Castle Hill in Ipswich, MA, it might help those interested to have a look at what they have done on Nantucket Island, here in Massachusetts as well. It might be a bit too commercial for Islay tastes, but you may find some good 'island' ideas. They have a Historical Society and a Preservation Trust to preserve old buildings and events leading up to Christmas to attract visitors. And a Whaling Museum....

I do think you made a good point Elaine and it would be great if it would happen like that. This probably is a one time opportunity for the community on Islay to get Islay House for themselves.

Further to what I said in the Islay Forum in the summer about what a nice gesture it would be if Bruno Schroder bought Islay House for the community, I have been happy to belatedly notice that he has since become more charitable on Islay with The Schroder Foundation.

Its commendable effort to help the youth of Islay is a promising start, but it does not appear that a maximum of 500 pounds will be sufficient. Traveling is expensive, as Mr. Schroder surely knows. For his charitable efforts to have the intended effect, it would be beneficial if the maximum amount was doubled to 1,000 pounds. For a start, children cannot travel alone and decent accommodation is very expensive, especially in London or Edinburgh, where they may seek to travel.

Now, as for Islay House...it has great potential for many uses.

The Maggie

Buy The Maggie from Amazon The Maggie is one of Ealing studios lesser known comedies. It is however a 'gem' in the true sense of the word. The film has everything, humour, tragedy, pathos, romance. A wily old skipper of a Western Isles 'Puffer' and his motley crew lead all who come into contact with them a fine old time!
