Islay will profit from Funding for Gaelic Education

The Scottish government published a press release this afternoon with good news for Islay. According to the press release Argyll and Bute council will receive £150,000 from which the larger part, or perhaps even most of it, will be spent on Islay for a new modular building which will be installed at Bowmore Primary School. A quote from the press release:

There will be more school places and increased resources for Gaelic-medium education across Scotland thanks to investment from the Gaelic Schools Capital Fund. Michael Russell said: "Last month, the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning and I committed to taking urgent and necessary action to create a new generation of Gaelic speakers. Both Glasgow and Argyll and Bute have strong Gaelic links and it is great to see demand growing from parents to provide their children with a Gaelic education. This increased investment will help both areas meet that demand and contribute towards our efforts to build a strong and sustainable future for Gaelic." Continue reading......

Argyll and Bute Council's Spokesperson for Education and Lifelong Learning, Councillor Isobel Strong, said: "I am obviously delighted that this funding commitment has been made by the Scottish Government. Argyll is the historical heartland of Scots Gaelic. Ever since the implementation of our Gaelic Language Strategy, Argyll and Bute Council has reinforced its commitment to the revitalisation of the Gaelic language. As part of that strategy, we made a commitment to continuing to develop existing Gaelic pre-school provision where the demand exists, and today's announcement allows us to do just that on Islay. This money will enable a new modular building to be located at Bowmore Primary for Gaelic medium early years education. I am sure that today's news will be welcomed by the local community, and I very much look forward to visiting the new facility once it is up and running."
