Islay Armistice Day Service 2013

Willy Inglis writes for the Ileach: "An Islay Armistice Day Service will be held this year at the Kilchoman Military Cemetery on Monday 11th November 2013, starting at 1030hrs. The Service will be conducted by Colonel the Reverend Angus Smith by kind permission of the Reverend Valerie Watson.

Angus Smith comes from Lewis, was educated in Stornoway and studied at the Universities of Glasgow and Aberdeen. After a term as minister on Benbecula, he spent 20 years as a Regular Army Chaplain seeing service in Germany, Northern Ireland and the Falkland Islands. Angus was the Army’s Senior Chaplain in Scotland until he left to go into the oil industry in 1991. A fluent Gaelic speaker, Angus will conduct the Gaelic Service on Islay on Sunday 10th November before leading the Remembrance Service on Armistice Day.

Kilchoman Military Cemetery is located on the hillside above Machir Bay, close to the old Kilchoman Church. The Cemetery includes many graves of the sailors of the Otranto, which was wrecked offshore from Machir beach on 6th October 1918 (see Lord Robertson’s article at www.islayinfo.com/lord_robertson_islay_troopships.html ).

A detachment from HMS Vanguard will be in Islay for the service, and they will also be visiting much more of the island than is customary for their annual visit. We look forward to welcoming them back. Anyone who is available to attend the service is warmly welcome. There will be soup and sandwiches afterwards, with a chance to speak to Rev Smith and the Vanguard crew.
