Granny's Rock near Machir Bay

Last year in October we were at Machir Bay in the afternoon just before sunset and we had the idea to go and have a look at Granny's Rock, providing we could find it of course. The problem was back then that I didn't know exactly what to look for and I had only a vague idea of where to look. I was told that Granny's Rock would be visible if you follow the track on the south end of Machir Bay to Kilchiaran and so we walked the track for quite some time. The problem, as said, was that we didn't know exactly what to look for and halfway up the hill close to the telecommunication masts I thought I had made a discovery and believed to have found Granny's Rock. My wife and I had quite a discussion whether this would be it, where I was convinced that I struck gold, she was just as convinced this was nothing. As you can see in the picture, and if you use your imagination, there is a face visible in the rocks, at least there is for me. Later when I showed this picture to Jeremy Hastings he told me this wasn't Granny's Rock and I decided for myself that this was probably a close relative or maybe a completely new discovery. Seems Manuela was right after all, as usual :-). Anyway, we had a very enjoyable walk and watched a fantastic sunset later on at the beach.

Now you are probably curious what Granny's rock really looks like. I have found two good pictures of Granny, one on Armin's website when he joined walk islay 2005 and another picture on Becky's website. At least now I know what to look for the next time I walk from Machir Bay to Kilchiaran and if we don't find Granny we will certainly enjoy another magnificent walk.
