Gordon Yates Wildlife Photographer

A few weeks ago I visited the website of Gordon Yates, a wildlife photographer, for the first time. I found him through the Islay Birding website from Jeremy Hastings. Gordon is a gifted photographer and film maker since 1972 and has produced a one hour film every year. He was rewarded several times for his photography and lives in Rochdale, Lancashire. When I visited his website Gordon was off on a trip to Islay for a few weeks and has returned in the meanwhile.

He has written an interesting account of his trip which was, from a wildlife point of view, very successful for him. A quote from his website: Here I am writing from Islay after our first week. The weather has been sunny at times but there has always been a strong wind and rain on a couple of days. As usual the Barnacle Geese have been very impressive, especially at dusk as they come to roost in their thousands at Bridgend. Islay is always a brilliant place for raptors and on one day I saw five Hen Harriers on my travels around the Island but this time failed to see any Golden Eagles. The highlight was disturbing a Hen Harrier and a Hobby fighting one morning at dawn.

On his website Gordon has some amazing wildlife pictures in a really stunning gallery, not only from Islay but also from his trips to the arctic region such as Spitsbergen and Iceland. The pictures in his gallery are for sale for very reasonable prices and are printed on high quality photographic paper. If you like to hear Gordon talk about his travels, and I'm sure he has some interesting stories to tell, you can even contact him to provide a lecture.

The picture of the Gannets, one of my favourite birds, was printed with permission from Gordon Yates and can be seen in it's original context here

The Maggie

Buy The Maggie from Amazon The Maggie is one of Ealing studios lesser known comedies. It is however a 'gem' in the true sense of the word. The film has everything, humour, tragedy, pathos, romance. A wily old skipper of a Western Isles 'Puffer' and his motley crew lead all who come into contact with them a fine old time!
