More Geese arrive on Islay

Last weekend the geese numbers on Islay were around 13,000 and the really big migration was about to start but southerly winds hindered the geese. Yesterday Teresa Morris of Islay Wildscapes wrote that things were likely to change today with the winds turning to the north-west and she was right. From early afternoon today the geese came flying in by their hunreds again to arrive at Loch Gruinart. Not the really big numbers yet but many thousands of geese will most likely arrive in the next few days.

Barnacle Geese at the head of Loch Gruinart

Teresa: This morning dawned with rain which soon cleared by mid morning followed by sunshine and a moderate to fresh northwesterly wind. Just what the geese needed.... during the day hundreds of Barnacle and Greenland Whitefront geese poured into Loch Gruinart. Entering Loch Gruinart from their Atlantic journey they followed the coastline of Killinallan Dunes passing the old crofthouse Crois and ending their journey landing on the mudflats and saltmarsh at the head of the Loch. Geese which had arrived earlier last week are now starting to disperse across the island.

I'm really enjoying the beautiful photos of the migratory geese.....just amazing the way these lovely creatures find their way to the chosen grounds every year. Wish I could be there to welcome them!

The Maggie

Buy The Maggie from Amazon The Maggie is one of Ealing studios lesser known comedies. It is however a 'gem' in the true sense of the word. The film has everything, humour, tragedy, pathos, romance. A wily old skipper of a Western Isles 'Puffer' and his motley crew lead all who come into contact with them a fine old time!
