Fuel Supply problems in Scotland
Friday, April 25 2008
I'm not in a position to make a statement about possible fuel shortages in Scotland and/or on Islay, all I know is what I read in the national media and hear from people on Islay. As most of you know by now the planned strike at the Grangemouth plant is likely to continue this Sunday and Monday, which will cause the refinery to perform a complete shutdown. As a direct result of the strike many motorists in Scotland were panic-buying and created queues which sometimes lead to empty petrol stations. Some filling stations implemented fuel rationing and spending was limited to £20 per customer. Prices of fuel also have gone up.
So far the situation on Islay seems "business as usual." I heard from several people that there are no shortages yet, and they are not expecting any in the first few weeks either. If you travel to Kennacraig by car my only advice would be to take an extra jerrycan of fuel with you. Be advised though that Calmac doesn't allow you to bring any filled jerrycans with fuel onboard their vessels.
As a service to the readers there is a topic in the Islay forum which is updated regularly when any news comes available. You will find links to the official news sources as well as links to Calmac's news pages.
