Our Five Star Islay Birding Trip
Sunday, July 08 2007
It seems so far away now but only seven weeks ago we joined Jeremy Hastings from Islay Birding on our (now) annual trip. Last year was our first acquaintance with Jeremy's birding tour and we had such a good time that we decided to do it all over again. On May 15 we headed to Port Charlotte where we met Jeremy and found out that we had him all to ourselves. It was a beautiful day with blue skies and sunshine. Jeremy had planned a trip over the Rhinns, from Port Charlotte to Kilchiaran and then Claddach, Portnahaven and back to Port Charlotte.
During our trip we visited the Tooth Stone, Kilchiaran Bay, Tormisdale Croft and we spotted almost sixty different species of birds. In his news section Jeremy wrote about that day:
Today we were with some Dutch bird-watchers (who run the popular website - islayinfo.com) enjoying the spectacular scenery and views on the Rhinns. A bright blue sky illuminated a cracking male Hen Harrier in the Glen and a pair of Chough too. A Cuckoo called and then flew overhead being closely followed by Reed Buntings and Meadow Pipits! A Whitethroat, Redpolls and Curlew added to the magic. At Kilchiaran there were Gannets, Arctic Terns and Fulmars too. We headed towards Claddach, watching young Lapwing and a Whinchat too.
Thanks to Jeremy and his knowledge of Islay and its wildlife we had a smashing trip and I wrote a full report from that fabulous day. The report and pictures are available on the Islayinfo website at: Islay Birding Trip 2007. Enjoy reading!
