Detailed Islay Satellite Images by Bing

Originally I had planned to post some more information about the ferries but when Roger McWee pointed out beautifully detailed satellite images from Islay I decided to skip the ferries for now. We all know Google Earth and the way it shows our planet through often very detailed satellite images. This is however not the case with Islay, I find most images rather poor and when you try to zoom in to get a greater detail you receive an error message that says that higher detail images are not available. Too bad, but thanks to Roger McWee there is a way to see Islay from space in very great detail. The answer to this is Bing Maps. Bing is Microsofts answer to Google, a search engine. Bing Maps is Microsofts answer to Google Maps and much like Google there is a 3D version too. Now what is so special about Bing Maps you might wonder. Well Bing Maps does what Google Maps doesn't. It shows the larger part of Islay in very high detail and you are in for a surprise when you try it out yourself. I have included a few examples in this post of Islay House Square and Port Ellen, but it is much more fun to find out yourself what a fantastic way this is to discover Islay, and other parts of Scotland of course. Ok, what do you need to do. Point your browser to www.bing.com/maps, click on aerial and zoom to find whatever you prefer. Almost the whole island can be seen in great detail which is big fun and a real eye opener. There is one part of the island however which lacks the high res maps and that is the Bowmore area and parts of the Rhinns. Enjoy!
