Following much local discussion regarding the impact of camper vans and mobile homes visiting Islay, a questionnaire was placed in the Ileach on 6 August 2016 in an effort to seek the views of the community. From the responses received, the following points were highlighted:
- Lack of grey waste / chemical waste disposal facilities
- Numbers of litter bins needs to be increased
- Designated parking areas required, especially during Feis Ile week
- Disseminate information to camper van and mobile home owners
Whilst the feeling was that this type of tourism to Islay should not be discouraged, appropriate facilities and more information should be readily available. Continue reading....
On discussing these issues with representatives of Argyll and Bute Council and Councillor Currie, the indication given was that, due to budget constraints, monies are not available at this time for such a project. At that meeting a request was made for additional, large waste bins to be provided in the areas used by these vehicles. A new facility is planned for Port Ellen called South Islay Camper Van Stop, which will be located at the back of the Filling Station. Planning has been approved for chemical waste disposal, water supply and hook up points.
It was therefore recommended that Islay Community Council, in discussion with stakeholders and local landowners, should look into obtaining land to allow an increase in facilities. This point would have to be raised at a Community Council meeting.
Whilst we are very grateful for the responses to the questionnaire, more work is required by both the Community Council and stakeholders. A brochure has been designed by the Community Council, with the assistance of the Ileach, funded by the Islay Energy Community Benefit Fund, which will be presented to Islay Community Council at the next meeting to be held on 7 February 2017 for final agreement. A link to the brochure will be made available on the Islay Community Council website and a press release will be issued advising visitors to Islay of this information. This further info and the brochure will be made available for download here as well. Hopefully it will result in better facilities for Camper Van and Motorhome owners who visit Islay. To be continued...
