Clyde and Hebrides ferry routes put out to Tender

Islay News

For many years Caledonian MacBrayne operated the ferries between the Scottish Mainland and the Hebrides. Caledonian MacBrayne, or Calmac, is fully owned by the government. EU regulations however demand that all ferry routes have to put out to tender to give other ferry operators the opportunity to take over the routes, which should result in more sailings, better timetables and lower costs.

A quote from BBC News:
The future of one of Scotland's best known firms - Caledonian MacBrayne - will be settled by next summer after MSPs invited bids for its ferry routes. The Scottish Executive said the 24 Clyde and Hebrides routes had to be put out to tender to comply with EU rules. Scottish Executive-owned CalMac will have to fight off the world's biggest ship management firm, VShips. Transport Minister Tavish Scott said the competition process would result in more sailings and better timetables. Last year, the 24 services cost the executive £32m.

The Maggie

Buy The Maggie from Amazon The Maggie is one of Ealing studios lesser known comedies. It is however a 'gem' in the true sense of the word. The film has everything, humour, tragedy, pathos, romance. A wily old skipper of a Western Isles 'Puffer' and his motley crew lead all who come into contact with them a fine old time!
