According to an article in thisisnorthscotland Bruichladdich Distillery managed to save 33% on electricity, a 21% reduction in oil per liter alcohol produced since 2004 and doubled production in the same time, raising their profits with 29%. Impressive figures and the increased sales can partly be traced back to the whisky's roots, the barley.

The X-factor in securing higher profits is believed to be the fact that in the same way that wines can be traced to a particular vineyard and quality meat can be traced to the place it was reared, Bruichladdich can trace its whisky back to the very field where the barley to make it was grown.
Managing director Mark Reynier said: "From barley to bottle we distil, mature and bottle our whisky on Islay. Like wine, we believe in provenance so are increasingly distilling organically grown barley around Islay and Scotland. Provenance, authenticity and quality, those are the three important factors and we have got them in spades. The consumer is more turned on to traceability and authenticity and quality than ever before. Our policy of buying barley direct from farmers means I can give you whisky from an individual field. It is entirely traceable."
