What is best on Islay?

  Wednesday, September 12 2007

I can come up with a lot of answers to this question, but then again I might be a bit biased. For me Islay is definitely best for its hospitality, the huge variety in wildlife and scenery and also for its eight top whisky distilleries in a relative small area of Scotland. There is however something else Islay is good in according to an article in the Scotsman. The Port Mor centre outside Port Charlotte, which opened its doors only four months ago, is already called the best campsite in Scotland, which is, if you ask me, a huge achievement. The Port Mor centre was built by the local community and offers a children's playground, the best campsite in Scotland, a quality restaurant with views over Loch Indaal, meeting rooms, wi-fi internet etc. The attractive website from the Port Mor centre gives a good overview of all the facilities which are offered, more information on Islay campsites is available at the campsites page on Islayinfo.

Back to a quote from the Scotsman: Glorious views over a sea loch, a splendid restaurant with French chef and wi-fi access for the laptop - not a five-star hotel - but a campsite. It's Port Mor at Port Charlotte on the island of Islay, built by the local community and using a wind turbine to provide its electricity. All this for £10 a day. The campsite has excellent showers, washing machine, tumble dryer - and next door is a football pitch with one of the most scenic, if sometimes blustery, locations in Scotland. My son and I watched a local derby, comfortably seated behind floor-to-ceiling plate glass windows as we tucked into a five-star dinner. Apart from the quality of the play it was like sitting in a top football stadium's hospitality suite. Service and food (morning coffees and lunches, and dinners at weekends in season) in the restaurant are magnificent.

A good review and this will certainly help the Port Mor centre, and Islay for that matter, to see more guests in the near future.
